If you pay for your funeral arrangements in advance, not only will you be saving family and friends the trouble and potential anxiety of having to make arrangements they hope you would have wanted, but you will also alleviate any financial pressures that may fall on others.
The cost of funerals is rising year on year, so you and your loved ones will also benefit from being able to pay at today’s prices for a funeral which will take place sometime in the future.
It may take several meetings to finalise all of the details, so you don’t need to feel pressured into making all the decisions at the first meeting. After all, we want you to be comfortable with every aspect of the arrangements. What your prepaid funeral plan consists of is entirely up to you. There are certain products and services that we would always expect to include even the most basic of funerals, but other elements can be added according to your preferences. Your prepaid plan would be entirely bespoke and unique to you.

Flexible payment terms
You can pay for your funeral plan in one lump sum, or we are happy to accept instalments if that suits you better. If you opt to pay monthly over a 12 month period, your instalments will be interest free. You can even choose to pay in instalments covering up to a 20 year period by direct debit. However, in this case, interest will be charged at the prevailing rate. Please ask us for further details on payment options.
Are there any hidden extras?
Unlike a number of prepaid funeral plans currently on the market, we guarantee that the price of the funeral written in the agreement is the agreed price and no additional charges will be added unless additional requests are made outside of the agreement terms at the time of the funeral actually taking place. Even if costs rise dramatically between the agreement being signed and the funeral taking place, those price rises will be taken care of by us – not by you.
The only costs over which we have no control are the elements of the funeral referred to as ‘disbursements’. These cover such things as cost of a grave for burial, crematorium fees, celebrant’s expenses etc. and can be costly, so you may wish to add a ‘contribution’ towards the disbursements at the time you are arranging the prepaid funeral plan. However, if the contribution proves too little, the balance will be reclaimed from your estate.
Should you pass away whilst abroad or away from home in the UK, we can still arrange to bring you into our care, although this may incur an additional fee if the distance is greater than that originally allowed for in the agreement. Should you require us to facilitate repatriation from abroad, additional fees will be levied to cover this extra service. Naturally, we can assist in these arrangements, but you would be wise to check that your normal travel insurance policy covers repatriation as it can be expensive if you aren’t covered.

Is my plan and money safe?
The first thing to reassure you of is that your prepayment is safe and protected. Any payments made go directly into the Golden Charter Trust Fund where it is managed by a board of independent trustees and is not paid out to ourselves until the funeral has taken place.
Golden Charter is the UK’s largest provider of prepaid funeral plans and has created the Trust Fund in such a way that it protects both you, as the client and us as the Funeral Directors. Add
Once all the elements of your funeral have been selected and payment arrangements agreed, you can rest assured that your funeral wishes will be fulfilled and no further payments will be required (other than the ‘disbursements’ as explained in the previous section) regardless of inflation between the time of purchase and the time of the funeral.
Naturally, if loved ones wish to add other elements to the funeral at the time it takes place, they are at liberty to do so unless you have expressly forbidden that to happen. Additional elements not included in your original prepayment plan will need to be paid for at the time of the funeral itself.
What if I move somewhere else in the UK?
If you move elsewhere before you need your prepaid funeral you have a choice; either we can still conduct the funeral according to your agreed plan, although some additional ‘out of area’ transport costs may be incurred, or your agreed prepayment plan can be transferred to another Golden Charter approved member.
If neither of these options are appropriate, your estate can be refunded all monies apart from an original trust fund administration fee of £249.
What if the funeral needs to take place before the payments are completed?
In the event of the funeral needing to take place before full payment has been received, the plan can continue as you have requested, but your estate or your loved ones will need to pay the balance.
However, if they do not wish to undertake this financial commitment all monies, apart from an original trust fund administration fee of £249, will be returned to the estate of the plan holder.
