Established customs

Do you want to arrange a traditional funeral which follows the established customs of such ceremonies?

Many people gain great comfort from funeral ceremonies that retain well established content that recurs through the generations.

If the person who has passed away is to be cremated, it doesn’t necessarily follow that the actual funeral ceremony must be held at a Crematorium. The funeral ceremony can predominantly take place at one venue and be completed at another if that is appropriate to your wishes. We will be happy to talk you through the options.

You may also wish to have your loved one at home or in your place of worship prior to the funeral taking place. Please find below some notes which we hope you will find useful and please talk us about it if you feel you would like either or both options to happen.

Conveying the coffin home

  • Often there is a wish for a loved one to rest at home for a little while prior to the funeral service taking place.  The length of time may vary from a few moments to several days and whatever you choose we can help
  • Prior to confirming the feasibility of this, we would visit the home address where your loved one is to rest and assess the best method for transferring the coffin into the home – our staff have considerable experience in completing this sensitive role and often this can be accomplished without too much difficulty
  • On the day of bringing your loved one home we will ensure that we bring the necessary staff and equipment we would need – it may be necessary to move some items of furniture which we will usually do for you and of course we’ll put them back afterwards
  • If you choose, we may be able to remove the coffin or casket lid to enable you to pay your respects – some of the families we represent like this and others prefer that the coffin lid remains closed; it’s your choice – just let us know
  • Subject to certain criteria you may be able to place personal items within the coffin or casket of your loved one
  • Needless to say, the transfer of your loved one from the place they are resting to the waiting hearse is also completed by us so you don’t have to worry about how this will all happen

Reception into Church

  • For some it is important that the coffin rests overnight in Church and it is conveyed there during the late afternoon or early evening before the day of the Funeral Service or Requiem Mass
  • This can bring much spiritual comfort and give an opportunity for those who find difficulty in attending the actual funeral an opportunity to pay their respects.  Usually the coffin is closed but should you wish there to be a period when it is opened then let us know and subject to the approval of the Minister or Priest we’ll accommodate your request
  • We can provide transport to and from the service for family and friends, so if getting there and back is an issue we can help
  • All of the arrangements to facilitate a Reception into Church are made by us and we can ensure that the costs incurred are included within our final account, relieving you of the administrative burden and most of the financial considerations as well

Wish to thank all staff at Mortons for being helpful, caring, understanding at my fathers funeral. Used the same director at mums funeral 10 yrs ago so recommend. Made the day a bit easier on a sad day.
